Omi's connection to seafood started at the age of 10 during family fishing trips and fish frys. Their love for fishing and cooking deepened after shucking oysters and slinging fish at a small, seasonal seafood restaurant in Minneapolis for 3 years. They also have a background in popular education, serving as a consultant and facilitator for non-profits and various organizing groups. In their spare time, they enjoy backpacking in the mountains, taking care of their plants and animals, and playing Splendor (especially the Marvel version).
