Youth Program

Fishadelphia runs an after-school program for middle and high school students at two schools in Philadelphia: Mastery Charter Thomas Campus (near 9th & Oregon, in South Philly), and Simon Gratz Mastery Charter (at 18th & Hunting Park, in North Philly). Our program meets 1-2 times a week at each location.

Our students host a biweekly fishstand for members to pick up seafood. Students learn about the fish species we sell - their ecology and life history, how they’re caught, and how to cook them. Students also learn business and technology skills, such as customer service, managing payments, and social media content creation. Students are invited to attend weekend trips to fishing docks and shellfish farms.

Students who participate in our program for longer than a semester are eligible to apply for a paid stipend. We also often hire students over the summers and after they graduate: check out our “Our Team” page to find out more about our students and graduates.

Our youth staff have extensive experience working with Philadelphia youth. We are an explicitly LGBTQ+ affirming space.

  • “I’ve learned a little bit how to run a business and cooperate with others.”

    Bryan (10th grade)

    Nayeli (12th grade)
  • “I like being a part of a place to help and work together.”

    Tristan (10th grade)
  • “I've tried fish from Fishadelphia that I wouldn't have tried on my own. I'm so used to just eating shrimp or tilapia. And now I've tried scallops and monkfish.”

    Nayeli (12th grade)
  • “What really pulled me in was when you talked about food justice.”

    Raymond (11th grade)

Are you a student interested in joining our program? Come learn about fish, teamwork, and running a business with us!  We welcome new students grades 7-12.  You don’t have to be a student at Thomas or Gratz to join our program.

Are you a program or job opportunity looking for dynamic awesome young people?  We love to connect our students with opportunities, such as Discovery Pathways and the FDR Park Work Ready program.
